While not as annoyingly wanktastic as Tidus, Sora has his own brand of self-absorbed stupidity. Still, he's generally cheerful and well-meaning, and in Kingdom Hearts II, he is significantly more badass with that Keyblade. Having been on the road for more than a year trying to understand what's happened to his homeworld and his missing friends Riku and Kairi, Sora has gained the friendship of those paragons of Disney virtue, Goofy and Donald Duck. Together the three of them wind up in the Underworld beneath Olympus Coliseum, where they have the good fortune to meet our favorite dead guardian.
"Maybe you need a guardian...."
Auron is initially raised from the dead by Hades to serve in Hades' grand scheme to defeat Hercules. There is no real explanation of why Auron, dubbed by Hades as the "mother of all bad guys," would be imprisoned in the Greek land of the dead, but hey, why bother to keep continuity straight in a cross-over game? Auron, quite understandably, tells Hades where he can shove it. Okay, he actually tells Hades that he's not part of Auron's story--I guess Auron doesn't like cross-overs.
That's when Sora and the gang barge in, try to take on Hades, and have to be dragged away by Auron. No sense fighting an invincible death god on his own turf, Auron points out. Impetuous as always, Sora has other plans in mind. Auron quickly shifts to long-suffering guardian mode and decides to look after Sora and his friends while they're in the Underworld--though of course Sora tells him that they don't need a guardian.
The relationship between Sora and Auron ends up being very similar to Auron's relationship with Tidus: the respect is there, but it's mostly hidden beneath snide remarks and a whole lot of impatience. Unlike Tidus, however, Sora is truly able to see how much Auron is suffering, and he isn't shy about letting Auron know how much he's appreciated. At the same time, he has no qualms about teasing Auron as much as possible, particularly when it comes to forcing him to thank others. Given how much of a Gary Stu Sora is, Auron really puts up with him admirably, and they have a few really fun exchanges.
