Like I'm close to something real
He's a criminal, an enemy of the Fire Nation...but I have a feeling that justice will catch up with him soon.
Apparently feeling that a sexy scar isn't enough, Zuko decides to take on a masked persona as the Blue Spirit, initially so that he can spy on Zhao and get a feel for what's going on in the Fire Nation while he looks for the Avatar. Later, when Zhao captures Aang, Zuko uses the Blue Spirit persona to break Aang out. Because of course if Zuko can't capture Aang, no one can. (This sort of wonky logic is why I both love and am severely annoyed by Zuko. Dude has issues, good Lord.)
We don't initially know that Zuko is the Blue Spirit, though, which makes S01E13 ("The Blue Spirit") that much more fun. Who's this badass masked ninja who's breaking into Zhao's dungeons and flinging those swords around like he actually knows how to use them?
The Blue Spirit ultimately causes more problems than he solves, though. Zuko uses the identity throughout season two to steal from and intimidate Earth Kingdom folks, mostly because he's got issues with being poor and on the run. Not the most noble reason to do the outlaw thing.
Zuko relinquishes the Blue Spirit persona in S02E17 ("Lake Laogai"), after using it to save Appa. Iroh suggests that it's time for Zuko to deal with who he is and dump some of the baggage, so Zuko gets rid of the Blue Spirit mask. Luckily he keeps up his super duper ninja skillz with the double broadswords, bringing them back most notably in S03E16 ("The Southern Raiders") to help Katara face the man who killed her mother.
